Improving Communication in Your Relationship

How important is having good communication in a relationship and what happens when people are not communicating effectively?

When people are not communicating effectively it makes many aspects of the relationship more challenging to navigate…

  • Solving problems becomes more challenging when people aren’t on “the same page”.
  • Often times negative emotions like frustration, anger, and sadness increase because people aren’t feeling that their partner understands them.
  • The longer issues go unresolved, as a result of ineffective communication, the more likely that both people will feel frustrated with the other person and it can even turn into resentment.

It can make a huge impact on relationships when people develop good communication skills. This is very important because it allows you and your partner to express how you both feel and think, gain a better understanding of each other, and build support together.

So how do we improve our communication? These are two skills you can learn to improve communication in your relationship:

1. Active Listening

One of the most important factors in having good communication is active listening, which means putting your own thoughts and feelings aside and intently listening to what the other person is telling you. When you are actively listening to your partner, you aren’t thinking about your next response or how frustrating they are in that moment. Active listening means being completely present and focused on what your partner is sharing with you. The information you get from actively listening can help you understand and communicate better with your partner.

2. Love Languages

Learning about the love languages is another way to improve your communication with your partner. One way to start is to learn what yours and your partner’s primary Love Language is. According to Gary Chapman, the author of “The 5 Love Languages, the Secret to Love That Lasts,” we have a primary way of expressing our love – Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Physical Touch, Quality Time, Acts of Service. He proposed that knowing your primary love language and your partner’s could help grow a long lasting, loving relationship. Understanding Love Languages could give you more information about yourself and your partner, and what each of you value the most. In addition, having this information can help you effectively communicate and listen to each other. This is an opportunity to adjust the way you and your partner approach communication more effectively.
